Upload points of interest to myGeoBook

You can upload a file with all your own points of interest of interest.

When you save the template it must be saved using an encoding called UTF-8. This is a bit technical but that is a requirement when uploading files via Facebook. Here's how to do it:

  1. Use Excel or similar to create a list of your data
  2. The data in the Excel file must have the following columns; Name, Description, Latitude, Longitude, Altitude, PhoneNumber, FaxNumber, Website, MailingAddress, Email.
  3. The Name and Description fields are mandatory for each point of interest and cannot be blank. The rest you can leave blank but a column must be there for each one - and the columns must be in the above order
  4. For the location you can either choose to specify the longitude and latitude or type in a full mailing address which we will then try to place on the map when you upload the file.
  5. When you are happy with the information in your file click "Save as" in Excel and pick the .csv format in the file format drop down list before saving the file
  6. Start Notepad and open the file which now has a filename that ends with .csv
  7. Check to see if the data in the file is delimited by commas. If this is not the case (e.g. the delimiter may be semicolon) you need to change your language settings to English in control panel ->  regional and language options -> regional options and then start over from step 5 above
  8. Check to see if there are any trailing commas at the end of the very last line in the file. Delete if any
  9. Click "Save as" in Notepad and pick the UTF-8 format in the encoding drop down list before saving the file
  10. Click the "Upload from file" link at the bottom of the "My Maps" page in the Geomarks application in Facebook. Browse your PC directory and select the .csv file created in step 9. Then click the "Upload" button. If you get an error make sure that you have followed all the above steps correctly
  11. When the file has been uploaded all your data is shown. At the top of the screen you first have to select a map for your uploaded Geomarks or you can create a new map and type the new map name and description. Then select an appropriate "Map Category" and click the "Import GeoMarks button.
  12. That's it - you're done! Now click "My Maps" in the menu to see your new data by ticking the box next to the map you uploaded the data to
